In the last week, I've noticed that my post-delivery brain damage has become acute. Among other things, I have:
- Tried to put my car in gear before turning it on
- Remarked to Steve how amazing it is that Katie is already four months old and 25 percent of the way through her first year (For the record, he shook his head and said, "Words, Susan. Please just stick to words.")
- Put my watch on upside down and didn't notice for hours
and
- Driven almost all the way home from work without stopping to pick up Katie at the sitter's.
According to my co-workers--who practically dared me to write about this in my "little log"--the next thing that will happen is locking Katie in the car. They say that's a rite of passage for all new moms. (And, I do vaguely recall Aunt Marbara having done that many years ago? Perhaps she can verify.)
At any rate, if you see my brain--it's gray, about 29 years old, and approximately the size of my Murphy hog head--please let me know. I sure would like to get it back.Comments:Add a comment:

On Saturday night, Steve, Katie, and I went to the grocery to get all the food for Thanksgiving. We were there for quite some time. I wheeled the shopping cart and slowly checked off my lengthy list. Meanwhile, Steve pushed Katie in her stroller and enjoyed the admiring glances and compliments of strangers.
It's amazing how our idea of a big night out has changed.Comments:Add a comment:

This afternoon Katie had her four-month checkup and received another glowing report from the doctor.
She is 23 inches long and weighs 13 pounds, six ounces--putting her in the 25th and 50th percentiles, respectively. Her head circumference is 15 1/2 inches, which is in the 25th percentile.
The doctor said she could start solids anytime, but it's not necessary until she is six months old. Until then, as long as she continues to be satisfied by breastmilk, we can stick with that. I was happy to hear that and hope we can do exclusive breastmilk for another two months.
When the pediatrician first came in, he spoke to Katie, who was already lying on the table. The little stinker actually "greeted" him back with one of her enthusiastic groans. Then, when the doc was examining her, he said, "You are one SQUIRMY kid!" I explained that her dad plays with her so much that she equates men with roughhousing.
There's no question that Katie was less enthused about the nurse who gave her four injections. (And, I had to hold her little legs straight--ugh.) I told Steve, the shots make me realize that Katie never gets that upset with us. But, Lordy, she CRIED about those needles!
Fortunately, by the time I was in the lobby scheduling her six-month appointment, she was "talking" to herself (probably cursing the nurse!). And, on the way home, she zonked out. That's where she is now--in her car seat sleeping off the day's trauma.Comments:Add a comment:

Katie is getting grabby lately. Last night at dinner, she kept trying to finger the food on Steve's plate. To distract her, I brought over a couple of toys. She quickly grabbed one and put it right in her mouth. (See photos in this week's album.)
Steve and I agreed that she probably needs some more tabletop toys to manipulate. I went right down to the Pooh pantry and found a package that seemed suitable. Katie and I opened it and discovered a keyboard that identifies colors and plays melodies. It also came with a music book that shows you how to play the songs yourself.
Katie had a ball just flinging the whole keyboard from left to right and right to left. Meanwhile, Steve was the one who was really taken with the toy. He pounded out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and "Winnie the Pooh" and couldn't have been more proud.Comments:Add a comment:

Happy four-month birthday, Katie!
Today I booked the flights for Katie and me to visit Louisville next month. We'll be flying in late on Thursday, December 16 and returning to Philadelphia the evening of Sunday, December 19. While we're there, we'll be celebrating Ma's (a.k.a. Greatma's) 80th birthday. And, we hope to see some more family, too!
Katie will get to travel again in January. Steve recently booked tickets for all four of us to visit Orlando. While there, we'll attend a party in honor of Aunt Sandy and Uncle Willy's 50th wedding anniversary. In addition, we're hoping to introduce Katie to Mickey and Minnie (not that she'll remember a lick of it... ;-).
USAirways needs a frequent flyer program for infants!Comments:Add a comment:

Yesterday Katie had what can only be described as an "off day." Mary said she was fussy and slept only 45 minutes all day! Mary suspects it was a tummyache, because Katie REALLY cried when she finally dirtied her diaper. However, Megan and Mary Kate were pleased to report that Katie's mood improved upon their arrival home from school. :-)
When Katie and I got home, we played for awhile, but by 6 p.m., she was out like a light. She slept until 10 p.m. when I woke her to nurse. She went back to sleep at 11 but, naturally, was up at 2:30 in the morning. (Yawn...)
Today she has been more normal, so keep your fingers crossed that she will sleep through the night! Please!Comments:Add a comment:

Well, Gran returned to Louisville last night. We had a wonderful week, even though I didn't get to spend as much time with her as before. (Work sure gets in the way of fun, doesn't it?!) Fortunately, Gran will be back soon for Turkey Day--along with Grandpa, Uncle Ryan, and Stephanie! :-)
P.S. For some reason, the most recent photo album--"Week Seventeen"--is showing up at the bottom of the "View All" page. I have been unable to correct this. My apologies for any inconvenience.Comments:Add a comment:

This afternoon, Steve, Katie, and I went to a mini "reunion" with two other families from our Childbirth Education course. Katie was the oldest one there at three and a half months. Baby Nyah is a hair younger at three months, and Little Sarah is just 10 weeks old. It was so much fun to catch up with everyone and see the adorable girls! (Check out the photos in this week's album.)
