I just got back from the 36-week appointment. Everything is still moving along fine. The baby is in position and my cervix has begun to efface and dilate. (Of course, that process could go on for quite some time!)
I asked the doc if there was any reason I should be sitting out of work. She quickly replied, "Nope--you can work right up until the end!" Darn... heh heh...
I also asked if I am, in fact, "huge" as Steve believes. The doc said my belly is measuring perfectly--the size is right where it's supposed to be. Even so, like Steve, I will be amazed if it gets any bigger. It just doesn't seem possible!?Comments:Add a comment:

I'm very excited because Mom and Dad have booked their air travel for the baby's birth! Mom will be flying up from Louisville on Saturday, July 17 and staying until Sunday, August 8. (She has to be back at school on the 9th.) Dad will be flying up on Thursday, August 5 and returning with Mom on the 8th. I am looking forward to the extended visit with my mother!
I sure hope Little Fanelli decides to come either early or right on time! :) Steve is sticking to his prediction of a July 19 birthday. However, I think that's wishful thinking on his part. As he says himself, he's "ready to get started!" (And anyone who knows Steve well will be shocked by this lack of patience... NOT!)Comments:Add a comment:

This morning we toured the maternity facilities at Abington Memorial Hospital. We learned which entrance to use, depending on when I go into labor. We also saw a sample "birthing suite," which Steve says is entirely different from the labor and delivery rooms of two decades ago! Best of all, we got to see a handful of newborns in the nursery. I have to admit, seeing them made me feel pretty excited. They're awfully cute, with those teeny tiny fingers and toes. It's hard to believe that in less than six weeks, we'll be bringing one home with US!

Yesterday was the 34-week doctor visit. Everything is still fine. I'll go back in two weeks for the 36-week appointment, and then I'll begin the weekly visits.
Today Steve and I went to another follow-up ultrasound. It was a quick one, but we got to see some really cool shots of our baby's chubby little face. As usual, she was moving quite a bit.
They "guesstimate" her current weight to be 4 pounds, 10 ounces. Assuming this guess is accurate, she would be between 7 and 8 pounds at birth. Fine by me!
After the ultrasound, I attended a breastfeeding course at Mercy Suburban in Norristown. It was awesome! I now feel very prepared to breastfeed. And, I was even more relieved to know my health insurance will cover an in-home session with a lactation consultant. I figure that if I encounter problems in the hospital, I can call my consultant right away. If not, I will just schedule a session for a couple days after arriving home. The consultant can just double-check that I'm doing everything OK and that baby is healthy. I can even get my pumping supplies directly from them, and they'll show me how to use it all.Comments:Add a comment:

This morning, Steve and I attended our first Childbirth Education course at my OB-GYN's office in Willow Grove. We were one of six couples. During the "icebreaker," Steve introduced himself as the "senior member" of the class. LOL...
This morning's session was pretty interesting. First, the instructor reviewed some common pregnancy complaints and how we can address them. (After hearing the list--including fatigue, backache, sciatica, and frequent urination--Steve has concluded that he, too, must be pregnant!) Then she talked about different philosophies of childbirth and the importance of relaxation. We learned two exercises that will help us prepare for labor. And, we capped off the class with 20 minutes of "progressive relaxation" guided by a cassette tape.
Next week we'll get a tour of Abington Memorial Hospital, where I'll be delivering.Comments:Add a comment:

This past weekend was shower mania!
On Friday morning, my mom, Aunt Lynda, and Aunt Peggy arrived from Louisville. They came to a co-ed shower on Saturday at my co-worker, Patti's, house. We got a lot of great stuff--including the stroller and infant seat we had registered for! Hooray! Steve already put everything together. If I can only learn to work them... :)
On Sunday, our neighbors Carol, Kelly, and Amy threw me a shower at Carol's house. They went all out with the decorations--from a "cake" made of diapers to "roses" made with baby socks. There was a balloon arch, drying racks full of layette supplies, "binkies" made of candies, and homemade favors made of white and pink chocolate. With some help from Amy, the girls--Kayla, Alyssa, Julia, and Heather--ran several fun games, including a bonnet-making contest. The hostesses even gave me a gorgeous baby-themed corsage to wear at the event!
I really enjoyed myself at both events and feel so grateful to have such wonderful friends and relatives!
Now, as I sit surrounded by all this gear, reality is setting in: There really is a BABY on her way...and SOON! I guess there's no turning back now. ;-)Comments:Add a comment:

Almost daily, we're asked if we've chosen a name for this baby. The answer is no. We're still talking it through and will likely make a decision at the last minute. Thanks for all the suggestions, though! :-D
