About Our Katie

September 2004

  • Wed, Sep 29, 2004 2:30 PM

Katie had her two-month appointment this morning. Her growth continues to be right on course. She is now 22 1/2 inches long and weighs 10 pounds, 9 ounces (no wonder my shoulder is sore all the time!). That means she's still hanging out in the 50th percentile.

This visit included four injections--two in one leg and two in the other. Naturally, she was none too happy about the shots. But she got over it fairly quickly and conked out into a nice slumber.

We met with the physician's assistant this time. She was really helpful. She explained to me that the "cold" we thought Katie had right after mine was most likely not a cold at all. She said most infants get newborn congestion, and it can last for quite a few weeks.

She also explained how breastmilk modulates based on each particular baby and even the season of the year. (It's thinner in summer, thicker in winter.) Mom always comments that my pumped milk appears much "richer" than hers did. The physician's assistant said that's probably because Katie eats relatively infrequently. Therefore, the milk has to be higher in calories. When a baby wants to nurse hourly or every other hour, the milk is thinner, because the baby should be taking in fewer calories at each feeding. Anyway, I continue to be in awe of the whole breastfeeding phenomenon. It's just too cool.

Well, Katie's inaugural visit to Kentucky has reached its conclusion. Gran said Katie and I could spend a month here and still not see everyone as much as we'd like. I think she's right. But, I also think we made the very most of our time... and we'll be back soon, I hope.

One thing's for sure: The poor abandoned dad/husband is ready for us to return to Warrington. And Stinky Doodles could definitely use a hearty round of "Who's ya daddy?!" :-)

Today Katie and I got to catch our breath.

We stayed in most of the morning, and then ran errands and had lunch with good ol' Grandpa. After that, she and I had a wonderful snooze on the loveseat.

When Gran got home from work, we three ladies met Grandpa and Uncle Ryan for a farewell family dinner.

Just before Katie's bedtime, Gran and Grandpa's neighbor, Joanna, stopped over to meet Katie. She gave her the most lovely (and generous) assortment of pink clothes. I could tell Joanna had a ball shopping... and I'll have a ball dressing Katie in all the adorable clothing!

This morning, Katie, Gran, Grandpa, and I went to church with Greatma and Greatpa. Katie saw (well, sort of) where her dad and I got married, and met the pastor who performed our ceremony. He even announced her to the congregation! :-)

After church and lunch, we spent some more time at Greatma and Greatpa's. Then we headed home for a visit by Aunt Peggy and Uncle Danny. While they were there, Aunt Lynda called to see if she could stop by for a visit. We got some nice photos of Katie with Gran and her two sisters.

Later, we stopped by Sue and Steve's. Steve was out of town, but we had a nice chat with Sue. And, finally, Uncle Ryan came by for some quality time with his niece.

    Pshew... No wonder I'm tired!

What a busy couple of days!

Yesterday, Katie, Gran, and I headed to Cincinnati for Sarah and Kevin's rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, and wedding. (At 11 weeks, Katie has already been in four states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Ohio. Just FYI.)

The rehearsal dinner was great. It was in a private dining room at Dewey's, a gourmet pizza restaurant. Katie got PLENTY of attention from Sarah's family. In fact, Sarah's stepmom enjoyed Katie so much that she started trying to convince her two stepdaughters to have babies ASAP! I'm not sure that she was successful. However, I think Katie might have contributed to my other college roommate, Megan's, baby bug. I predict Megan will be a mom sooner rather than later. (After her April 2005 wedding, mind you... :-)

At Sarah's outdoor wedding today, Katie was fine until the bridal party (including yours truly) walked past. She let out a squawk, and Gran quickly took her to another end of the property.

On a side note, Sarah ran a very well-organized (and lovely!) wedding. It was no accident. At the rehearsal she distributed a personalized "Agenda and Duties" document to each of her family and bridal party members. I told her that I did something similar when Steve and I got married. However, my wedding was much smaller and less sophisticated, so I was able to create and distribute a single matrix to everyone. Anyway, Sarah and I laughed about it and were reminded of why we've always gotten along so well! :-)

Katie and I had another busy day. This morning we stopped by to visit Greatma and Greatpa. Katie was unusually fussy until Greatpa took her outside for a walk. She conked out as soon as he set foot on the front porch! (Then he showed her off to the neighbors. :-)

We had a lovely ladies' lunch at Linda Ann's house and got to visit with some cousins, including Kendall. For dinner, we went to Aunt Marbara and Uncle Jordan's. Emily was there, of course, and Andrew came home from college for the tasty meal.

Uncle Charlie and Adam also stopped by briefly. (Unfortunately, Katie was nursing the whole time they were there, so Adam didn't get to hold her. Next time!)

Today Katie and I spent the day with Aunt Peggy. She helped me run all sorts of errands in preparation for Sarah's wedding this weekend. Katie was good all day and didn't spit up on or otherwise dirty Uncle Danny's immaculate car! :-)

We also stopped by Baptist Hospital East, where Aunt Peggy works. During our visit, there were all sorts of ladies making a fuss over Katie! She definitely attracts a lot of attention wherever she goes. (Grandpa says he wants to take Katie to the mall so he can pick up chicks. She's a real "babe magnet.")

Today Katie, Grandpa, and I went for lunch at Aunt Lynda and Uncle Charlie's house. Katie got to meet her great-grandfather, Pop! We enjoyed a delicious lunch while Katie took a two-plus-hour nap on Uncle Charlie.

Tonight Uncle Ryan took me to the apartment he now shares with his old college roommate, Clint. It's a nice, spacious apartment and definitely a bachelor pad. (There's a weight bench in the kitchen--enough said!)

Katie and I arrived in Louisville today. She was an absolute angel on the plane ride. She even made friends with several elderly passengers. One of the ladies told me, "Katie made our trip fun already. Watching her is better than reading my book!"

Once in town, we immediately headed for Carter School to see Gran. Then Grandpa and I took Katie to Ma and Pa's (well, I guess I should say Greatma and Greatpa's) house for a visit.

After Katie and I returned to Gran and Grandpa's, Uncle Ryan stopped by to see his niece. (By the way, his new-to-him car is really nice, and who would've guessed he'd keep it so darn clean!?)

Later, Gran, Katie, and I went to Kelly and Jim's new house in Middletown. (The house is beautiful!) In addition to her cousins, Katie also got to meet Aunt Lynda and Uncle Charlie. I have a strong suspicion that Katie thinks Gran and Aunt Lynda are the same person! :-)

I have plenty of photos to post as soon as we're back in Warrington.

P.S. A big "happy birthday" to Danielle, who turned 20 today! As she likes to point out, we are both in our twenties now. Scary, eh? :-)

Bright and early tomorrow morning, Katie and I fly to Louisville for her first visit. While there, I'll be able to make text updates to the site, but I don't think I'll be able to upload any photos. So, stay tuned for a MASSIVE update the middle of next week.

The general public continues to be fascinated by Katie's hair. Every day I'm asked, "Did you have a lot of heartburn?" (For the record, the answer is a resounding "Yes"!) And, earlier this week, an older gentleman walked up to Katie and me and said, "Why, I thought she was wearing a wig!"

When Katie was born, a lot of people told us her hair would fall out--but it hasn't. It's getting lighter and longer, and Steve thinks even a bit thicker (yes, he's horribly envious!). But it's definitely not disappearing.

In fact, Steve's salon has already begun recruiting her as a customer. At this rate, she may end up getting her first cut long before her first birthday.

Katie's still going for gold in her own personal "Crib Olympics."

Last night, as always, I tucked her in to her sleep positioner and covered her with a blanket. When we checked on her this morning, she had wiggled out of her blanket and sleep positioner, had rotated her body 90 degrees, and was using her little legs to push off the bumper pad!

I'm convinced that she wakes up every morning and asks herself, "Will today be the day I can get out of here on my own?" I dread the day she succeeds!

In other milestones, tonight Steve and I left her with our neighbor, Carol, and her daughters, Kayla and Alyssa, while we went out for dinner. It was the first time we've left her with anyone besides Gran. I think Katie fussed almost the whole time we were gone (except when put on a shoulder and walked around). Of course, shortly after Steve took her, she went out like a light. Sorry, Carol!

Katie and I spent over two hours this morning waiting for my car to be inspected and serviced. She must've gotten wound up by all the new sights and sounds, because she would NOT go down for a nap! Finally, at 3 p.m., she and I curled up in a chair and took a tag-team snooze for two hours. Now here I am at 10:30 p.m. just sitting down to do some work. Better get going...

Today Gran, Katie, and I met Danielle for lunch. We had the best time! Katie was absolutely fascinated by Danielle. She was studying her every expression--and mimicking many of them. She smiled at Danielle and, even funnier, stuck her tongue out when Danielle did so. (See this week's photo album for an "action shot"!)

Tonight Steve had an after-hours office function, so Gran, Katie, and I got to spend nearly three hours browsing at Target.

I have to laugh as I watch my mom being a grandmother. She is completely different than she was with me as a child. Now she's all about putting together cute ensembles for Katie. Matching bibs and blankets are a must...and cute hair accessories are preferred. The heck with pragmatism!

I haven't seen my mom this interested in fashion since, well, NEVER!

Today Steve, Gran, Katie, and I took a ride to Monroe Township, NJ, to see Grandma Renee and visit her community's annual Labor Day Fair. We enjoyed ourselves, and Grandma Renee had a ball showing Katie off to her many friends and acquaintances.

"Impatient KY Grandmother"--the one who frequently signs our guestbook and comments on photos--is here at last!

Gran's arrival was a bit rocky, as I confused the flight times (she landed around 8 a.m. and I thought it was supposed to be 10!) and she accidentally left her cell phone at the Louisville airport, making last-minute communication difficult. Nevertheless, the grandmother-granddaughter reunion was a very joyous one.

Steve and I are already taking full advantage of the babysitting services! This afternoon, we ran errands unencumbered. And, tonight, we had a "hot date"--dinner outdoors followed by a walk through Doylestown borough. We just got home, and both Katie and Gran are tucked in for the night.

This is the life! ;-) We'd better enjoy it while it lasts...

Today Katie visited Grandma Renee's house for the first time! We had lunch in Jamesburg, NJ, and even stopped in to see Aunt Shelly at work (but it was her day off, darn it!). Katie also got to meet Grandma's dear friend, Barbara, whose daughter predicts Katie will be a soccer player. (I think she might be right!)

All in all, it was a terrific day out (and much-needed for me, considering I hadn't left the house since Sunday! Ouch!).
