Katie just had her first scrambled eggs (actually, it was just one!). I used the "Mimi Method" and just microwaved a single egg without adding any butter, milk, or salt.
Katie fed herself and seemed to like this new food. However, judging by how much egg was left on the floor, on her PJs, and in her chair, we aren't sure that she actually ATE any! ;-)Comments:Add a comment:

Today was Katie's nine-month check-up. She tipped the scales at 18 pounds, 12 ounces. Her body is now 27 inches long and her head circumference is 18 inches. For height and weight, she's hovering right below the 50th percentile. Her head circumference, on the other hand, is in the 90th percentile (I guess she inherited my large head!).
She gave the nurse heck during the measurement process. She would NOT lie still; she arched her back, kicked her legs, and shrieked with displeasure. She was a bit better for the doctor--but only after he offered her three tongue depressors to play with. The doctor said her lack of teeth should not be cause for concern. I told him that she still isn't doing "traditional" crawling, and he said as long as she gets around, she's fine. (She does!) Finally, he told me that we can step up the introduction of more table foods. She can have eggs and meats anytime we want to offer them to her.
This visit, she got only one shot--her third (and final, I believe) vaccination for Hepatitis B. The nurse who administered it is new, but I have to say, she did a fantastic job. Katie barely whimpered!
FYI, some recent "firsts" include:
* Yesterday she vomited for the first time after gagging on her own fist (nice, eh?).
* This morning she used both hands and pulled herself up (halfway) on the bathtub; I think she wanted to peek in on the running water.
* One morning this week, while we were lounging together on our bed, she saw Vito and said "kihee-kah." It could've been a coincidence, but it sure sounded like a (very!) primitive version of "kitty-cat" to my ears.Comments:Add a comment:

Katie and I are on our own this week while Steve is in London on business. I have a feeling she's going to miss him A LOT this trip. This morning before work, she was really looking--and calling out--for him.
To compensate, I dressed her in her "Daddy's Little Princess" outfit and the hot pink Converse/Chuck Taylor hightops he bought for her yesterday. I'll have to post a photo of those later. They're a hoot!Comments:Add a comment:

We've had a wonderful weekend visit with my college roommate, Sarah, her husband, Kevin, and her younger sister, Katie. At dinner yesterday, they introduced Baby Katie (and me, for that matter) to edamame--green vegetable soybeans. Katie really liked the edamame. Earlier the same day, Katie had some black beans at a Mexican restaurant. She liked those, as well. (I'm not sure how much all these fiber-rich table foods liked her, though. In the dirty diaper department, she's been unusually prolific!)

Yesterday evening, I held Katie as we walked around our yard and checked out all the budding trees and about-to-bloom shrubs. As we walked on our front sidewalk, Katie spotted two young boys across the street. She immediately started calling out to them and waving frenetically with her right hand.
She doesn't have the "royal" wave technique down quite yet. In fact, she looks more like she's desperately trying to shake her fingers off her hand. But at least she's trying to wave--and at the right times, no less.
In other news, there are still no teeth and still no forward crawling (only reverse crawling and hiney scooching). She's still "advanced" in one area: hair. She got her second trim last night (photos to come). :-)Comments:Add a comment:

We all survived my weekend out of town. Steve had a busy two days playing "Mr. Mom" with Katie. They spent lots of time outside and even ran some errands together. On Monday, Danielle did a wonderful job taking care of her baby sister. She even dressed and fully accessorized her. (Danielle can do pigtails as well as Steve!) She took some ADORABLE pics, which I will upload as soon as she sends me the files.
Even so, Katie seems a little worse for the wear. When Steve arrived home from work yesterday, she became clingy and would stop crying only when he held her. This morning, she was clingy with me. And, Miss Mary just said that Katie has been unusually clingy with her, as well.
Miss Mary said she thinks Katie is a "routine baby" who really feels the effect of being out of her usual groove. I just can't imagine why she's like that--especially since Steve and I are so spontaneous. ;-)Comments:Add a comment:

There's a reason people always say, "They grow so fast": It's TRUE. I can hardly believe today marks Katie's nine-month "birthday." And, as I look through her "Watch me grow" album, I just can't believe how much she--and her hair--have, well, GROWN!
She still isn't doing any traditional crawling (only moving backwards and scooching on her rear). And, she still has no teeth that have broken through. But she's getting more physically adept and more interactive every day. She definitely says "Dah-ee," "Ma-ma," "bah," and "yay." And, lately, I'd swear she's also saying "up."
In other news, we're going to hit a new mother-daughter milestone this weekend. I will be away for two nights in Cincinnati visiting my college roomies. So, over the weekend, Steve will be on his own with The Stink. And, on Monday, Danielle is going to look after Katie while Steve is at work and I am en route from Ohio. (I know Katie and Danielle will BOTH enjoy that--even if Danielle has to finally change a dirty diaper! :-)Comments:Add a comment:

As Katie's mother, of course I think she's priceless. But even I was shocked to learn how much my health insurer paid for her birth and seven-day stay in Abington's Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit. The total--not including all my pre-natal OB visits, tests, and ultrasounds--came to a whopping $42,734!
I know Aunt Peggy will not be surprised by that tab, but I sure was. Man, what do you do when you don't have health coverage?!Comments:Add a comment:

We had another beautiful spring day. After dinner, Steve and I took Katie for a walk around our neighborhood. Man, that kid LOVES to be outdoors! (She must get that from Steve, not me...)
Anyway, she sat way up in her stroller so she could scope out all the sights and sounds. And, when we saw another family out for a stroll, she started bouncing up and down and calling out to them. So far, she seems to enjoy meeting and interacting with other people.
When we got home, she and her dad were playing their usual games. He insists she was telling him she was hungry by saying "bah" repeatedly. I made her a four-ounce bottle and I must admit, she was awfully happy to get it.Comments:Add a comment:

Early this morning, I was finishing up some work in the study. Katie was playing happily in her playpen in the kitchen. At one point, I thought I heard some plastic rustling, which made me nervous. So I decided to peek in and make sure things were OK.
Just as I got up, I heard a CRASH. When I walked in, I saw Steve's coffee mug broken in four pieces on the floor--and his leftover coffee-with-milk splattered everywhere. And, oh yeah, a very guilty-looking cat cowering in the corner.
Who knows exactly what happened, but it must've involved Vito being on the table. Was he trying to get into the playpen and his back legs kicked over the mug? Or was he just lounging on the table and Katie startled him with one of her high-decibel outbursts?
I never did figure out what that rustling sound was, but I sure wish I'd heard it just a minute sooner. What a mess on a Monday morning!Comments:Add a comment:

This week Gran and Grandpa have been in town visiting and taking good care of Katie. As usual, Gran's suitcase was loaded with goodies for Katie (including some adorable bathing suits--see the April album for photos). Their load will be much lighter on the return trip.
The weather has been great this week, so Gran, Grandpa, and Katie have been able to spend lots of time outdoors. They've gotten to see all of her new tricks, and they swear she says not only "Dah-ee" but also "Ma-ma" and a variation of "Yayyy" when clapping her hands.
As always, we've been taking advantage of their babysitting services. In a stroke of good luck, this visit coincided with our third wedding anniversary. So, Steve and I got to go out for dinner at Domani Star in Doylestown (delicious--highly recommended!). Of course, we still rushed home to see Katie before bedtime.Comments:Add a comment:

Yesterday Katie combined two of her latest stunts. She stuck her left forefinger in her left nostril and her right forefinger in her right nostril. After a couple of seconds, she pulled them out for a round of enthusiastic applause.
Now, if that's not a sign of high intelligence, I don't know what is! :-)
