Last night, Katie continued playing outside with the neighbors while Steve and I sat down to dinner inside. When she finally came in, she insisted on sitting in her dad's chair, not her own booster seat. As I placed a plate of food in front of her, she asked her dad--in her own inimitable way--for an eating utensil.
Steve went to the drawer and pulled out a plastic fork. He held it up for Katie to see, and she smiled and nodded enthusiastically--seeming to give her approval. But when he walked over to her, she "inspected" it more closely, shook her head, and uttered a firm "No."
So Steve went back to the drawer and found another fork. This one was plastic and metal. Again, he held it up and got the affirmative reaction. And again, once he brought it to her, he faced her decisive rejection.
This went on and on and on--and was clearly her idea of a very funny joke. I have to admit, it WAS pretty comical to watch.
Finally, Steve brought over the whole pile of flatware. Given so many choices--and what must've been growing hunger--she settled on a spoon ("poo") AND a fork and wolfed down her cheese omelette and broccoli.Comments:Add a comment:

I just realized: we didn't take a single photo over the weekend. So while I don't have any new pictures to upload, I do have some quick stories.
First, Katie is now "counting." It goes something like this:
Susan/Steve: One.
Katie: Two.
Susan/Steve: Three.
Katie: Two!
Susan/Steve: Four.
Katie: Two!! (She becomes increasingly louder and more enthusiastic with each "two.")
Susan/Steve: Five.
Katie: Two!!!
Susan/Steve: Six.
Katie: Nigh. (We think that's supposed to be "nine," which was the Number of the Day on a recent Sesame Street episode.)
Second, Katie is suddenly very interested in infants. At Little Gym on Saturday morning, her classmate Emily was there with her two-month-old sister, also named Katie. After class, Emily and Baby Katie's mom was arranging Baby Katie in her car seat. Katie Fanelli stood there for quite a while, staring with fascination.
Also on the baby front, Katie and our neighbor, Madison, interacted for the first time yesterday afternoon. Katie put her face close to Madison's and gave her several snot-covered kisses. (Thankfully, Madison's mom, Kelly, is laid back! LOL) In return, Madison took both hands and gave Katie's mop a good pull. The two girls also tossed a mini soccer ball and baseball back and forth. (I use the word "tossed" loosely! :-) It'll be so nice once they can really play together...Comments:Add a comment:

Katie diapers her stuffed lion. She gives him Desitin, wipes his nose, and brushes his mane. Last night, as I ran her water, Katie decided that the lion needed a bath. Sigh. Guess it was only a matter of time before that happened!

I recently discovered that Katie loves the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have a cute version of the book (from Gran, of course) that looks like a little portfolio case; there's a handle on the spine and a "lock" that you have to open to get to the pages.
Anyway, for the past week, I've been reading it to her before bed. As I read it, we count one-two-three with the bears and their porridge, chairs, and beds. I do the booming Papa Bear voice, the regular Mama Bear voice, and the squeaky Baby Bear voice. You know the drill, I'm sure.
What's different/funny is what happened the first time I read the story to her. Without any prompting, when she saw the illustration of Goldie approaching the door, Katie sat up, banged her hand on the side of the chair, and shouted, "Nah! Nah!" As I read the corresponding text--"Not much later, a little girl named Goldilocks knocked on the door"--I realized exactly what she was doing.
I have since incorporated my own knocks into the telling, but Katie never fails to beat me to it as soon as she sees that illustration. (I have a distinct feeling that they've read--and re-enacted--this story a time or two at Elbow Lane!)Comments:Add a comment:

Some recent cute stuff:
* Instead of just signing "all done," Katie now says "ah-duh" as she holds up her plate.
* She really "mothers" her dolls and stuffed animals. She wipes and diapers them (or, at least tries to!). In fact, the other day she even applied a dot of Desitin cream to her lion.
* She also likes to style hair. She takes her spray bottle of hair detangler, turns the top a bit, and gently puts it on the stuffed animal's scalp. She then brushes their hair--usually with the smooth side, not the bristles! :-)Comments:Add a comment:

Katie had a great second Easter. It started bright and early, when she discovered a "Little People" dollhouse that had been left in our dining room.
Danielle arrived soon after, and her dad quickly showed her a "mysterious" trail of carrots leading down our back steps. (Good ol' Steve just CANNOT let this one go; he will most definitely be leaving carrots and/or lettuce around when Danielle is 50...LOL)
At any rate, Danielle and Katie worked together to find all of the hidden eggs in the annual Fanelli Easter egg hunt. They then moved upstairs to find their baskets hidden in Danielle's bedroom. (Check out the video of them as they opened the eggs. Danielle squealed and danced when she opened the first one and discovered some much-needed cash. As always, Katie copy-catted her to a "T." It was hysterical!)
We also hosted the Fanellis for an early Easter dinner. Katie and her cousins, Kaylah and Derek, played really well together inside and outside. It was great to see everyone--and to have little ones around to keep Katie busy and out of trouble! ;-)Comments:Add a comment:

Katie has a couple of new "tricks." As I mentioned before, she can climb into both our cars and up into her car seats. In addition, she can now open the doors on Steve's car. Over the weekend, she was playing in the car while we worked outside. On Monday morning, Steve discovered that three of his four doors were ajar. (Luckily, the battery wasn't dead!)
Last night, while I made dinner, Katie let herself out on to the steps. She was making her way down to our patio when Steve arrived home from work. She quickly came back in to greet him. But while he and I chatted, she went BACK out and was all the way over at the house next door (without shoes on, I might add) before we realized she was gone.
We need to rig up a secondary lock (yes, she knows how to operate the door locks) to keep her from "roaming."Comments:Add a comment:

This afternoon we took Katie to the Warrington Township Easter Egg Hunt. Although it started at 1, we arrived 40 minutes early (so what's new...?). It worked out OK, though, because Katie had a ball just being outside and around so many other children. And we bumped into several neighbors and acquaintances, which was nice for Steve and me.
The hunt itself was a bit anti-climactic. Last week, Gran had done several practice rounds with Katie--to make sure she'd "get" the concept of searching for eggs. But the Township just puts hundreds of eggs on the grass in several open fields!
Even though the hunt for her age group was over in, oh, two minutes, she had a ball. She collected about 10 eggs and thoroughly enjoyed opening them and pulling out her chocolate "treasures."
Katie really fussed when it was time to leave--always a sign that she's had fun!Comments:Add a comment:

Today after school Katie and I went to Target--where I violated two of my own rules. I bought her a box of apple juice AND a set of Sesame Street DVDs. I keep waiting for a bolt of lightning to strike.
(In all seriousness, I'm sure I'll pay the price the next time we go: she'll march to the snack bar, point at the Minute Maid, and demand, "Moh!")

Yesterday, Gran, Grandpa, and I experienced Katie's "Dark Side" while eating at Friendly's (or at least trying to!). Let me tell you: this side is dark...VERY dark!
We still aren't sure exactly what set her off, but she had an all-out fit. She got so mad she was red-faced, shaking, and hiccuping; it was as if she started down that path and then was unable to turn back! She passed out shortly after. I'm not sure if the fit caused her to be exhausted or if her exhaustion caused (or contributed to) the fit. It was probably a little of both.
At any rate, she was being cranky again this morning, and she's been GNAWING on her fingers all week. (Two eye teeth are coming through.) So I whipped out some Tylenol, which (I hope) will take the edge off. Right now, Gran and Grandpa are out with her at Jungle Jim's Kid Zone. If she isn't happy in a place like that, there's just no hope!
In other news, my dad seems to be abandoning the moniker "Grandpa"--and with good reason. Katie has been calling him "Paw-Paw," and that seems to suit him just fine! (My mom, meanwhile, is holding firm on being called "Gran," even though Katie can't say it yet.)Comments:Add a comment:
