About Our Katie

August 2007

For over a year, Steve's Aunt Carol has been telling me how much her two grandchildren love the Disney movie called High School Musical. She kept telling me Katie would love it, too, and while I didn't NOT believe her, I guess I just wasn't that motivated to see for myself.

On my birthday, Danielle watched Katie while Steve and I went out for dinner and shopping. That Friday just happened to be the night thta High School Musical 2 premiered on the Disney Channel. And around 8:10 p.m., I got a text message from Danielle saying how Katie LOVED the show. (A major musical lover, Danielle was already a fan of the first one.)

Since we happened to be at Best Buy, I bought a copy of the High School Musical DVD. I actually watched it that night and thought it was cute but not earth-shattering (really, it just seems like a G-rated Grease to me). But the next day, when Katie got to watch it, it sucked her right in! I don't know what kind of bizarre subliminal messaging Disney uses, but she is positively mesmerized by the singing and dancing, She has watched at least part of it every day since and has started pre-announcing scenes (for instance, "Dere goin' be bire-works on tee-bee, Mommy... WATCH!").

She watched a bit of the movie before bed last night, and she woke up this morning with two things on her brain: "We goin' Wet-ims?" (her second home) and "I wanna watch High Goo Mu-dick!"

So, Disney can add another pint-sized fan of Troy and Gabriella (a.k.a. "Droy" and "Grab-bri-ella") to its tally.

    Comments:
Katie H.:  I can't watch this cause I will be sucked in also. I recently, while on maternity leave, started watching a new soap because one storyline including high school kids was being done in musical format. I would fast forward through the other stories...can you say addict?

Yesterday while getting her bath, Katie announced, "I gotta jabe my legs!" She proceeded to soap up one leg and align her fingers to simulate a razor. She then scratched her nails against her skin with brisk, repetitive motions. After she finished "jabing," she told me she needed to do her "beet." I knew just what she meant, so I grabbed the pumice stone from my tub, and Katie rubbed furiously at non-existent callouses.

The cherry on the sundae came when she tried to "take charge" with her dad. She wanted him to change the TV channel. "Put 'Noddy' on now, Daddy!" she said. When he didn't, she got serious with him: "Put 'Noddy' on now. One... two... bree..."

    It's a good thing I don't smoke crack, eh?

I decided it was sort of pitiful to have no August photos up on the 13th of the month, so I took a few quick ones before school this morning. I'll try to get some more...

    Comments:
Gran:  Yes, some of us had noticed the lack of August photos, but were too polite to mention it.

I haven't taken a photograph of Katie in just about a month, and so I don't have any new ones to post. In the absence of visual pictures, I'll share some written vignettes:

    * Katie has started over-emphasizing plurals so that when she calls me back up for one more kiss goodnight, she shrieks, "I need a kitz... and hugs-iz...and pats-iz!"

    * She recently made a game of testing every light switch on the first floor of our house. Using her trusty step-stool, Katie worked her way from room to room, flipping each switch, and then taking note of which light went on or off.

    * When I picked her up on Friday, one of the afternoon assistants, Miss Stephanie, was still chuckling from a conversation she and Katie had just finished. According to Stephanie, she told Katie that she was so beautiful she should ask her mommy and daddy to make her a brother or sister. "I HAB a dit-ter" was Katie's huffy reply. When Stephanie asked if she didn't want another one, Katie dug in her heels even more and said, "I HAB a dit-ter. AND a dog!" Case closed, people.

    * Another day at pick-up, I was astounded by the exchange of affection between Katie and her friends. As we were leaving, she and Ashley stopped for a hug and a kiss (right on the mouth!). Not keen on being excluded, Tori came running over for a Katie hug. And as we walked out the door, I heard Mia say, "Bye, Katie! I love you!"

    * Earlier in the week, I had a basic exam at home for a new life insurance policy. I can't even remember why, but I had mentioned it to Katie beforehand, and of course she made me explain exactly what the nurse would do--including drawing blood. Steve picked her up from school that day, and when they walked in the door, she ignored Dee, Angel, and her dad and headed right over to me with a look of distress. She held my thumb and asked with concern, "Lady come 'day? Pinch lure binger?" It took me a second to get it, but then I explained that I was wrong; instead of pricking my thumb, she took the blood from my arm. I then had to show her the teeny-tiny dot at my elbow about 12 times before lights out!

    * I don't know if she's always paid attention and just couldn't articulate until now, but lately she has this incredible wardrobe recall. She'll see a particular shirt, pick it up, and tell me where she wore it last, or even what the last two occasions were. She saw a new outfit of mine drying on the guest-room bed, and said, "Oh! Dat dress Adam wedding! Nepf wedding, I wear a pretty WHITE dress. Mommy wear a pretty BLUE dress..." and so on. And, as always, on the rare occasion I buy a new pair of shoes, she notices--and comments--in MILLISECONDS.

    * She continues her fixation on categorizing what's "bor boys-iz" versus "bor girls-iz." For instance, "Lipdick not bor men, Daddy. Djew can't have any, 'kay?" she said today as she applied my lip gloss. For awhile she was telling me that anything Spiderman--for example, the box of Spiderman Band-Aids that came in her multi-pack--is only for boys. I somehow convinced her otherwise, and she then picked out a Spiderman t-shirt at Target. (In hindsight, I wish I hadn't said anything, though. The shirt is ugly!)

    * A couple of weeks ago, Danielle took her to Target to pick out a toddler-friendly CD player for Katie's nightstand. Ever since, Katie has had a ball putting in and taking out her various CDs, and always wants to listen to one at bedtime. She continues to enjoy music in the car, too, especially what she calls "Daddy dongs-iz"--a CD that Danielle burned for him years ago and includes ELO and Ten Years After. "Turn to Stone" and "I'm Going Home" are her absolute favorites. She barks "Louder!" no matter how loud we turn it up, and loves to dance like a maniac in her car seat.

    * And, saving the most exciting news for last, Danielle bought a new car this weekend. For quite awhile, she's been telling Katie that once she has a new car, she'll be able to have a car seat in the back all the time, so they can go places together. Unfortunately, we hadn't actually BOUGHT a third seat yet, and so Katie was confused as to why she couldn't zoom right off in Dee's new white Scion TC. Forunately, we found a perfect one on Target.com (notice the shopping theme?!), and it's on its way...

Last week was Katie's three-year well visit at the pediatrician. We prepared by reading Danielle's copy of _Farley Goes to the Doctor_ several nights in a row. Katie decided that, like Farley, she should bring a "friend" with her to the doctor's office. So, on Wednesday, I picked her up a bit early from school with the Farley book and one of her favorite baby dolls in tow. As we drove to the office, I glanced to the back seat and saw nothing but five little fingers and the Farley book spread wide. (I suppose she was "cramming.")

In the book, Farley gets a shot, and Katie is now sufficiently aware to be nervous about getting one herself. When we walked through the door, she whimpered a bit, and when they called for "Katherine," she whimpered even more. Fortunately, there are no shots for the three-year visit. She simply got weighed on the "big girl" scale (she is now 32 pounds) and then weighed her doll on the baby scale next to it. They also measured her against the wall for the first time. (She is 37 inches tall.)

After taking the measurements, the nurse led us into an unfamiliar room to take Katie's first blood-pressure reading. Katie was none too happy when she spotted the arm cuff and the attached tubing. Hoping to comfort her with Farley, I frantically flipped through the book but soon remembered he doesn't get a blood-pressure check. The nurse eventually calmed Katie down by promising that she could get a reading on baby's arm. (You'll be relieved but probably not surprised to learn that Katie and baby both have normal blood pressure!)

Finally, the doctor arrived for his exam. Katie gave him the cold shoulder at first but soon warmed up. It probably helps that lately she's been fascinated by the different types of doctors (pediatricians versus veterinarians versus dentists). I tried to get her to say "pediatrician," but of course she refused. However, when the doc asked her what veterinarians take care of, she said "Kitty cats!" without missing a beat.

The visit concluded with Katie selecting a sticker. She made the doctor show her every option before finally choosing one at the very bottom of the pile, and then she made a bold bid for a second sticker. Alas, the doctor politely but firmly told her, "No, we have to save these stickers for other kids." Lucky for me, she took the "no" graciously and we were on our way...
